Le Manoir à Nehou

Néhou - Normandy - Cherbourg Peninsular
NO24

Although a fine example of perfectly proportioned fortified sixteenth century manor house with its towers, Manoir à Nehou retains an intimate and homely atmosphere. Completed in 1556 by the first Lord of La Mare, the Manoir first opened its doors to guests more than 450 years later after extensive restoration.  Less than 30 minutes drive to the south of Cherbourg, it now offers comfortable guest accommodation with each room presented in its own distinctive style, whilst incorporating traditional French fabrics and wallpapers.

The River Douve gently meanders through the manoir's five acres of rolling grounds - home to a menagerie of local wildlife together with a charming collection of chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, and the hosts' friendly Border Collie who has taken on the role of Lady of the Manor!

Guests at the manoir are regarded as friends rather than merely visitors - a reason, perhaps, why many return time after time to enjoy the unique hospitality.

Accommodations: All rooms, 2 doubles, 1 twin x 2 and a family suite are comfortably appointed, spacious and with en-suite bathrooms featuring large corner baths or hydro-power showers.  Bedrooms are furnished with Louis XIV canopy or four-poster beds and offer magnificent views over the extensive grounds and surrounding countryside.

The drawing room provides a relaxing retreat at any time.  Here, guests can enjoy morning coffee, afternoon tea, pre-dinner cocktails or after-dinner drinks, or simply fall asleep in a comfortable armchair after a busy day on the beach.  In the evenings, a traditional log fire is set to add to the relaxed atmosphere.

In warm weather, the terrace - overlooking gardens and the river - is the perfect spot to unwind. Norman sunsets can be spectacular, and at night an unbelievable number of stars shine down on Néhou. In fact it was the light quality of the region - both during day and night - which inspired many French impressionists.

Heated swimming pool and spa with deluxe bathing and secure access has been created for the exclusive use of guests.

Continental Breakfast, included in the basic tariff, is served in the large family dining room where the table is full of delicious local delicacies - including fresh croissants, brioche, baguettes, yoghurts, home-made preserves, locally- produced honey, cheeses, cereal and fresh fruit.  Coffee (including decaffeinated), English tea, hot chocolate and fresh fruit juices are all available.

The dining room is also used in the evenings when dinner is available at additional cost.  The extensive and imaginative menu varies from day-to day, with all fresh produce bought locally from nearby farms, markets and shops.  Any dietary requirements can be catered for - just give good notice of your requirements.

The hosts pride themselves on being able to offer individual advice and recommendations for days out, restaurant bookings, local shops and services, and the history and folklore of this particular corner of real France.

Other facilities available for guests include archery, table tennis, pool table, basketball, trampoline, badminton, large football field with nets and of course, a boules pitch. On the social front the Courtyard Bistro offers everything from an ice-cold draught beer to a tasty snack or homemade three or four course meal in elegant and relaxing surroundings.
