Not far to the east of Le Touquet and 40 miles south of Calais, this 17th century farmhouse, built in white chalk stone stands in complete traquility in the pastoral valley of the River Canche on the edge of Marles-sur-Canche, a small rural village. The old house faces onto a medieval farm courtyard, now laid to lawns, with old farm buildings on each of the other 3 sides: peacocks, ducks and cats are very much in evidence as Madame is a devoted animal rescuer.
The bedrooms, reached by an old staircase, quite steep and to be negotiated with a little care, are absolutely beautiful in a genuine old world manner, which is entirely in keeping with the great age of the house - white stone walls, tiled floors, candles, wood carvings and large antique beds with crisp white linen. The 4 guest rooms, two doubles and a suite with two bedrooms, a double plus another with 2 single beds, either overlook the courtyard garden or the water meadows to the rear. All have nice private bathrooms and the other two share a third.
You will find that your host who speaks very good English is kind and considerate without being overwhleming in her hospitality.
Continental breakfast, served in the magnificent dining room with vaulted ceiling, monumental fireplace and old oak furniture, and featuring home made preserves, is always included in the standard tariff. Dinner is only offered in the winter months and not in summer - however, there is a good choice of restaurants in the vicinity, nearest being in the old fortified town of Montreuil (your hostess will be happy to advise and make reservations).
Open all year.
There is not a single doubt that this is one our very best guesthouses, indeed one of the best available in France.
