On the western border of the extinct Volcano Park in the Monts de Cantal, the fairy tale medieval village of Salers stands on the brink of a high plateau looking out over the Maronne Valley. Many of the houses inside its ancient walls are like small chateaux with turrets, signifying its historical importance as the capital of Haute Auvergne during the 15th and 16th centuries. It origins date back to the first Crusade and the ramparts were built in the early 1400's on the instruction of King Charles VII as protection for a large castle. The castle was later dismantled by Louis XIV to discourage the threat of armed uprising in the region and much of its dark volcanic stone was used to build the village that can be seen now. Many of its beautiful Renaissance buildings can be visited now including the Knight Templar's residence, which is now a museum.
Chez Prudent is a relatively new house dated 1777. Accommodations are above the owner's shop, which sells souvenirs made of volcanic rock, and entered via a secluded back garden. From the garden and some of the windows there are lovely views of the spectacular landscape (we attempt to book those rooms with a view).
There are 6 double rooms with exposed beams and dormer windows, all with shower and toilet en-suite. They are clean and comfortable with nice country style beds but not very large - perhaps lacking the finer character of the old house itself. Your English speaking hosts serve a delicious continental breakfast on the terrace or, in less clement weather, in your room (included in our tariff). Evening meals can be taken at one of several restaurants within walking distance.
Additional child's bed available.
